Stephen II [III]

Stephen II [III]
(d. 757)
   Pope.
Stephen was born in Rome, Italy, and in 752 he replaced another Pope Stephen II who died before his consecration. He is remembered for seeking the protection of the Frankish King, Pepin III, against the Lombards, turning away from the traditional papal ally, the Emperor of Constantinople. Pepin’s campaigns were successful and, as a result of his ‘Donation’ of 754, the Papal States were established. These were to be the basis of the Pope’s temporal powers until the reign of Pope Pius IX in the nineteenth century.
